Q: which car to get? USED toyota tercel, corolla, camry, honda civic or nissan sentra?
Hi all, i’m a poor college student and i need to find a RELIABLE car for as cheap as possible. will probably be getting a used car from a private party on craigslist or something. probably a 1994-1997 toyota tercel, corolla, camry, honda civic or nissan sentra. i will be getting a clear titled car

factors to consider:
cost of car
cost of parts
cost of maintenance
mpg (though they’re all pretty similar)
i need an automatic

right now the costs of the cars are in this order: lowest to highest
tercel
sentra
corolla
civic
camry

i plan to drive this car around 4-5 years, and i want to not have to bother with maintenance so much and if i do, which car has the cheapest? i heard civics have the cheapest parts, but a civic is about $1000 more than a tercel.
but i don’t know how much maintenance i’ll have to put into the tercel and if i do, would the prices add up??

thanks for your expertise. share any stories/experiences about the mentioned cars or any warnings.
ALSO

i plan on getting a car with around 100-150k mileage
so i need one that will last me 4 years, i don’t really plan to resell it, but it’s a possibility. even if just for a couple hundreds…
i won’t use more than 10k miles a year and they’re mostly going to be freeway miles
ALSO apart from craigslist, ebay and yahoo auto

where can i get used cars for LA area ? cheap and reliable?
thanks
preferably private parties. sites
does anyone know how much it’d cost to fix the AC and horn for a civic?
thanks

A: I’ve owned a 92 Civic, 3 Corollas (89, 92, 95), and 90 Tercel, but not Sentra or Camry. And I am a college student, AND I bought all of these cars for $1000 or under. I also bought all of them with my own hard earned money, so I know the value of a reliable and easy to maintain car. I am also training to be a mechanic so I know which is easier to get parts for, etc…

The most enjoyable, reliable, and best overall car would be the Corolla. I had a 95 Corolla and currently drive a 92 Civic. They both are cars that can run up to 200k miles and can still be good. The Corolla has a little more room and a little more power. The Civic does cost much, much less for parts. Though overall the Corolla faired me the best, and was the most reliable. It also sold for the most. It is the easiest car I have ever worked on, and thats between hundreds.

I think you should focus on these two cars, the Civic and Corolla. They are equal all around, its just availability. Matter of fact I am selling my 93 Honda Civic and getting a newer 2000 Civic to finish out this last year of College to get my bachelors degree. They are really good cars.

BTW, Tercels are okay, just I find the engines weak, and sometimes they cost within 2 or 3 hundred of the Corolla which is way better. But if you get the Tercel its okay too.

Good luck.

Q: Used Honda Accord or Toyota Camry?
I am in the market to purchase a used Honda Accord or a Toyota Camry. My current vehicle is a 94 Toyota Landcruiser but I am looking to downgrade as my commute to work and current gas mileage just do not agree. I have leased Honda Accords before 96 Accord EX, and 98 Accord EX Coupe. I never had a problem with my Accords (except for the reacall on the 98) but that was years ago.

I would like to know from peoples experience and personal knowledge what if any problems or reacalls they are aware of in Accords and Camrys between the years 1994-2004. Particularly, if there are any model years that I should stay away from.

A: You’re going to get a car that will outlast most 3rd world nations either way, but Hondas are known for better interior materials, fit and finish. See: http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/10245/mid-size-four-door-sedans.html
Honda: 1st Place… Toyota: Dead Last
Or you could really go crazy and buy American, but how American would that be?

Q: Where does the power steering fluid get added in a 1997 Toyota Camry? What type should be used?
I lost the manual and we need to get this added

A: Power steering reservoir is located on the right side of the engine. The reservoir is a translucent plastic and the fluid can be checked visually. The fluid recommended per my Haynes manual is Dexron ll or lll automatic transmission fluid. This is the manufacture recommendation at time manual the manual was written, but it also recommend to check with auto part store for current recommendations

Q: I want to buy a used but dependable Toyota corolla or camry in range of $4000 to $ 6000.?
I did internet search for certified dealers in vein as they do not have cars in my range. I came to this country a few months back and I have seen some car dealers (not Toyota certified)on highways selling used cars. Is it a good decision to buy from them? Please help me in this decision.

A: I’d go through a private party, with the stipulation that your mechanic does a check of the car. It’s a money saver.

http://www.carsdirect.com is a pretty good site.

Q: Buying a used car for commuting: 1986 Toyota Camry with 80k miles on it? Or 2000 Hyundai Accent with 100k?
The Toyota looks to be in very nice condition despite it’s age. So everyone says Toyotas but the Hyundai’s you can buy much much newer for the same price. My friend who knows about cars tested the Hyundai and it seems to have a strong engine, drove great.

A: the Toyota is too old

but i wouldn’t buy a Hyundai or a Kia made b4 2004

go here to read what other 2000 Accent owners had to say:

Q: Approx price of a 2000 toyota camry transmission?
What is a fair price for a used 2000 toyota camry transmission?

A: It depends if its a automatic or standard,it also matters if its a 4 cylinder engine or a six cylinder the six being more expensive usually. If its a 4 cylinder auto your looking at 2500 for a rebuilt and if its a six auto probably about 3000.If you can find a rebuilt standard probably around a1000.Salvage yard prices will be about half that, but I would never buy one as Ive had bad luck with that stuff.Good luck.

Q: What could it be? Clicking noise on Toyota Camry 97 LE, on head. Could it be valve lifters bad or valve adj?
First of all, thanks for all your help recently. Anyway, hopefully you can help me with this too. I recently just purchased a used Toyota Camry 97 LE car and it’s making some clicking sounds on the inside the engine head when I step on the gass. The heavier I step on the gas the faster the clicking sound. I took it to 2 gas-station car-fixing shops and both technicians thought that the valve lifters needed to be replaced but they weren’t exactly sure. I then took it to a dealer and the service advisor (not a technician, he’s the person who schedules appointments for technicians) and he said he never had to replace the valve lifters on a Toyota before, and that he had been there a few years already. He said if anything, it should be that the valve needed an adjustment. He wanted $120 just to diagnose it. These things are expensive so I was trying to avoid having to pay $120 just for diagnostic. Do you happen to know what this problem could be? Please help. I appreciate it.

A: On that car you do not have lifters, nor are the valves easily adjustable.

The cam lobes ride directly on top of the valves. There are “caps” which fit over the valve springs and they have small shims in the end that contacts the cam lobe. The clearance is measured and the shims are replaced with thicker or thinner as needed. These don’t wear out or get “out of adjustment” unless a cam lobe is worn down, or a valve face has burned.

There is a service bulletin warning not to bend the internal baffel under the valve cover when filling with oil. I have seen these bend and ride on the cam causing a click.

Don’t overlook an exhaust leak. That can mimic the sound you describe.

Take it to someone who is familiar with the Camry.

Q: is a used 2004 toyota camry le with 104000 miles worth 10000?

A: No, honestly it is not worth 10k. When it hits 100k miles it needs almost a full service on it. Replacement of certain things, engine flush, and more. Also new tires if on original, alignment, and everything. That would up the toll on what you pay. And that is a lot of mileage on a car, considering average people drive about 12k a year. That would mean the car drives about 21k a year and thats almost double a year. If the car hasn’t been taking care of that engine will go later on and you will have problems with the car.

Q: is it possible to find a toyota camry for at the most for 6000?
i want to find a used toyota camry.
the year 2000
and low miles
and only 5000

A: Not one that runs, or was in a Huricane

Q: 2000 Toyota Camry – squealing to the left and right problem?
I just purchased a used Toyota Camry..when I turn the wheel all the way to the left or right it squeals…a man told me that it probally has “air” in ..humm something..told me to let it squeal and get the air out..it did stop for a little while..but the squeal is now back..what could it be??

A: sounds like you have a slipping belt, check and tighten if necessary.

Q: Used 2006 Toyota Camry LE Save this car $5,995?
I’m going to buy my first car, is it worth this much because it has 320,240 miles on it? will it die soon or not.
thnx, i know nothing about cars :D

A: At 300,000 + miles… it’s not even worth $1,000. Yes, it’s going to die very very soon. That’s about the life of a Toyota.

Q: Whats the better used car, Ford Taurus, Toyota Camry, or Buicks and Olds’?
Got to find a car 1500.00 Whats the safest direction?

A: Dont get the Taurus. My parents bought one with 40k miles and ended up spending $5000 in repairs! Literally something went wrong every other week. They were soooo happy when I totalled it in an accident (not my fault btw).

I also made the mistake of buying a Taurus with 90k miles and it blew its engine after 500 miles.

Also rented a Taurus once and its fuel gauge was wacked even tho it was a brand new car. Plus got terrible gas mileage in the low 20s. Comparable Accord and Camry get over 30MPG.

For $1500, you can buy a 88-92 Honda Accord. I bought a 88 Accord for $900 and it was great for the year I owned it. Took it on numerous 500 mile trips and never once broke down. Plus got 40MPG.

Q: what is the price of a used transmission for a 1993 toyota camry?

A: try asking the guys at askautopro.com

Q: What is the use of Camry toyota cabin air filter?
I went for oil change at toyota for my 2002 camry and they asked me to change the cabin air filter. They said it makes the car over heat and it cost me 45 bucks .
So is it true and if not cos I doubted the guy, what is the main use of the cabin air filter, and does it affect the car if not changed?
I guessed the only prob is low air quality in the car but not sure. Help

A: the cabin air filter is there to clean the air in the cabin. go back to where ever you heard them say that it the car over heat and tell them BS! i can guarantee what i am saying. pull his guy card and then burn it, foolish guy making stuff up to make you buy it.
