Q: i want to find a reliable used Jeep Wrangler?
I am trying to find a reliable used Jeep Wrangler 4 cylinder, 2 door, ranging from years 1997-2004. can anyone tell me about them as far as safety, reliability, miles per gallon, maitanence? I am not looking to buy one online but specifically find what year and model of wrangler would be the best bet. I know consumer reports puts bad reviews on the new 2008 wrangler and 2005 and 2007 wranglers were also put down as cars to avoid in consumer reports. the car i want in within the 1997-2004 range i believe. But i would like to talk to some Jeep Wrangler owners and have them tell me their thoughts on their vehicles. It is something i am planning to save up money for, but i want to have a good idea of what i want to buy when the time comes.
you can email me for more information or just ask on this answers site. thank you for your time!
i would be using the vehicle for daily driving and hopefully maintain it and give it enough TLC to keep it around for years to come!
I live in northern california. the weather is good here currently. I live in a good quiet neighborhood and our parking is up a driveway out of the street. i don’t have any cover or garage space to keep the vehicle when the weather is bad though. I thought of getting a hard top.

I thought of getting a hard top. I am also looking at possibly a 1993-1994 toyota celica hatchback, or a 1993 pontiac firebird even. I keep having to go up in years on my searchs because the older models that i love best do not have the proper safety features that i want. and i’m assuming you can’t custom install airbags or anthing?
A: i love my jeep and wouldnt trade it for too many other cars. for safety….. its probably as safe as a pop can. its not something your going to want to drive on the highway much since there is a better chance for an accident. reliability, its great. i dont think i have ever had a time when i went out and tried to start either my 93 or 03 wrangler and them not start so they are VERY reliable. miles per gallon they are pretty good i guess for a 4 wheel drive. i think in my 93 i get 18 mpg and my 03 GOT around 19 before i put tires and stuff on it. now it gets about 13 or so. its not too great anymore. maitanence is pretty good. there isn’t all to much to them so things are easy to replace. i keep mine on the road no mud or anything, they can take it but i want to get money out of them someday and i like clean jeeps. so for the most part, there isnt much at all that goes bad in wranglers. i LOVE mine and highly recommend buying one!
Q: 2002 Jeep Wrangler installed used factory hard top, what hold rear glass shut?
Top came off a 2003 wrangler (salvage yard). With tailgate closed it opens until it hits spare tire. There is no place for latches.
A: Loosen the back window at the hinges and pull it down as far as you can. Tighten the hinges. The tailgate should keep the back window closed. If you cant get it down low enough, try raising the tailgate at the hinges.
Q: What questions to ask when buying a used 2 door Jeep Wrangler?
I don’t know a lot about cars but I am interested in buying a used Jeep Wrangler. I have recently found one and its a 2005 Rubicon. It seems to be a good deal, $10,000 and only 55,000 miles. It comes with Car-fax and it has not been in an accident, its automatic and has A/C and front and rear air lockers. And a 4 to 1 low range transfer case also. What other important questions should I ask the person selling it?? What else do I need to know about the car before considering buying this 2 door Jeep.
A: Well probably the first question you need to ask is what kind of Jeep do you need? Are you going to be doing a lot of serious off-roading?? If so, what kind? Rock crawling, mudding, messing around in the sand dunes, etc… If not, what will the Jeep be used for?
The Rubicon is the most off-road capable Jeep they make. For that reason it is also the most expensive. If you aren’t going to be off-roading a lot, then there really is no need to pay the premium for the Rubicon. A cheaper trim level would be just as nice.
One question I would ask is how often the Jeep was taken off-road. I would inspect the undercarriage for damage to the skid plates to verify the information that the owner gives you. An 05 for 10 grand seems very cheap to me… So it might be a good idea to take it to a mechanic and get it checked out before you buy. Also check the tread on the tires. It’s possible that it needs new tires and that’ll be another thousand to two thousand dollars probably. Depending on the make and model of tire that you get.
You’ll also want to know about any aftermarket parts that have been added. And who installed them. Also, depending on your needs/wants it may not be a good idea to get one particular vehicle because of the parts that have been added or taken away. You may find that you want to remove, or add something later on, and you’ll spend more money by starting with something that is already built in a way you don’t want, than if you just found one that was stock and built it from the ground up the first time.
That’s a very long-winded answer. Best way to do it would be to figure out exactly what you would use the vehicle for, and then pick the proper Jeep to suit your needs. It’ll keep you from spending extra money on something that you don’t need. You can also check out jeepforum.com for a lot of information regarding any question that you could possibly ask.
Q: Used 1998 Jeep Wrangler with 175,000 miles, would it be worth it?
Used 1998 Jeep Wrangler with 175,000 miles, would it be worth it? Their selling it for $6,200. It’s a 4c 5speed 4×4. Jeeps keep their price, but the mile age is making me iffy.

A: if it was the In line six it would probably be worth that much but the Jeep 4CY is a notoriously underpowered problem prone P.O.S especially seeing as its so high mileage again the in line six’s last for almost ever but the 4cy have very short life spans if you can negotiate the price down $1500 at least and can afford to have an engine swap done than go for it other wise run away run as far and as fast as you can the body’s in good shape but that motor is probably trashed but like i said if you can afford the engine swap the motor will usually cost about $12 -1400 from a shop or you can go to a junk yard and probably get one for $500-1000 and labor will probably be about a $1000 so really unless your looking for an easy project vehicle you’re better off just buying one with a six cylinder in it or finding one with a good body/transmission but no motor hope i helped
Q: how would a used jeep wrangler cost?
my range is from about, $1000-3000
OR like a truck at the same price as well as being used
A: wranglers hold value but i got mine for 3200. and it is rust free and has 125k miles. i was lucky it was a steal but had to travel 2 hours to get it. if you look hard enough you can find something but it will prolly need some work
Q: is high mileage on used jeep wrangler bad or good?
A: It depends on the maintenance that was done it. A well cared for Wrangler can easily hit 200K and still be going strong. I have two Wranglers right now, one has 98K miles the other has 144k miles and both are going strong. I recently sold a Jeep Cherokee with well over 240k miles on it.
High mileage is not a problem in and of itself, the problem is whether or not good maintenance (regular oil changes and servicing) were performed. If yes, then shouldn’t be a problem.
Q: Which is all around better for a jeep wrangler: automatic or manual transmission?
i want to buy a used Jeep Wrangler and im not sure if i should buy a automatic or learn to drive manual.
A: if you’re going to be on-road, a manual may be the way to go. it sounds as if you’re a bit of an inexperienced driver, so you may do some limited off-road, in which case, the manual trans will be fine for that as well. if you, however, plan to go rock crawling, the auto. trans will help keep forward momentum by not rolling backward as you pedal from brake to accelerator. in any case, be safe, have fun, and tread lightly!
Q: How does a Jeep Wrangler with a lift kit handle on the highway?
I’m looking at used jeep wranglers to buy. There are a lot with lift kits, I really like how they look but I don’t know how well they handle on the highway. Should I get one with a little lift or just stock? I’m not planning on going off road much…
A: I drive a Hummer with a lift kit. It takes a bit of getting used to. You feel a wobble every time you hit a bump, but its good for driving through snow and mud.
Q: I’m thinking about buying a used Jeep Wrangler. Are they long lasting cars/can they handle lots of miles?
I work from home and don’t intend to drive the car that much…just errands, etc. I would like to spend $10,000 or less, so it will have to be a car that has about 100,000 miles on it. I have heard that these cars last a while, but it seems strange to buy a car with that many miles on it. I have also heard that they are not too difficult to work on, but I am not very good with working on cars. Any advice?
A: Jeeps CAN be pretty reliable, but they have their quirks, and some suspension problems, too. I have 157,000 on mine, with no major work other than front drive universal joints. I’ve been told 200,000 or more is possible with no expensive work. The engines are good, usually the transmissions, too, it’s the suspension and leafsprings that are the first to go. Also some rust issues, around the rear leaf springs, weak driver coil spring breakage, and some other issues come to mind. Nothing that should stop you from considering one. They’re not Cadillac smooth, but they get the job done. I own a ‘94 Cherokee, and it’s done all right by me, 22 mpg highway.

Q: I want to buy a used Jeep Wrangler and don’t know too much about the different model years?
I’ve always wanted a Jeep Wrangler with a lift package and 4WD – ever since I learned to drive. But, I’ve always stuck with ‘more practical’ cars. Now, I just want to buy one for once-in-a-while use/fun. Is there a specific model year(s) I should stay away from? How about trim packages?
Can anyone make any suggestions for my situation? I don’t want to spend a lot of money, but I also don’t want to get something just because it’s cheap.
A: The year and model is going to depend VERY much on what you have available for sale in your area, and have an opportunity to test drive, and how low the seller is willing to go on the price, etc…
BUT, that being said, if you doing it for the experience of offroading – forget about the “trim packages” and 2WD. There really isn’t any other veritable reason for buying a Wrangler, so… forget about trim and 2WD.
I really recommend finding one with 6 cylinders that already has a 3″ lift, locking diff. (especially one that you can control from inside the cab.) Since moving to Spain, I have found the holy grail of Wranglers is actually one that I had discounted and dismissed as weak, prior to offroading in one: The turbo-diesel inline four cylinder Wrangler. Better range, better mileage and cheaper fuel (sorry, in the U.S. diesel is inexplicably more expensive?) makes up for noisy, loud, dirty and smelly. Since Wranglers already are noisy, loud and well, you’re offroading, so find the one that is in your price range, that they let you take offroad during the test-drive, and that has the least miles on it.
When they say “JK” they mean the current (since 2007), modern ones with V6’s, and TJs are the ones with inline six engines. The older ones (older than TJs, older than 1997) have square headlights, and probably more hassle than you want, even if the price seems right. Especially if the price seems right.
Welcome to the cult, I mean club.
Q: I would like to purchased a used jeep wrangler no older than 1999 with real glass side windows.?
What is the reccomended max amount of milleage for a vehicle as such?
A: well the average driver puts about 12,000-15,000 miles on their car a year so 15,000 x 8(years)=120,000 but you will probably be fine w/ anything under 140k as long as it is been well maintained
Q: What is good year for a Jeep Wrangler?
I am looking to buy a used jeep wrangler Sahara or SE and I was wondering which years were a better make of the vehicle. Also as far as mileage I was wondering when jeeps started to break down and need more repairs. Thanks.
A: Wranglers are reliable and tough. I prefer the 1997 to 2006 models with a 6 cylinder and 5 or 6 speed trans. They ride better than the earlier models.
Q: How do i convince my parents that a Jeep Wrangler is SAFE?
Basically i want to buy a used jeep wrangler. year around 2000-06.
Anything that could help me convince my parents i wont die in one? or why its such a great car?
THANKS
A: You have to make it safe. It is easy to kill yourself in any car. Jeeps are not the safest cars out there. They are top heavy and short, so only you can operate it safely. I like my jeep because it is fun to cruise around without the top and doors on and go off road, but on the highway I understand that it is not as stable as a car that is lower to the ground.
Don’t try to convince them that the car is safe, convince them that you will be safe in what ever you drive.
Good luck!
Q: The pros and cons of purchasing a used jeep wrangler are…? A full tank=$__?
A: cons:
-wranglers get about 15 mpg. think about how much you drive and calculate your monthly fuel bill. see if that’s in your budget.
-see how many miles are on the jeep. check it’s maintenance record. if it’s had major repairs chances are it will need them again in the future.
-jeeps don’t handle well at high speeds. they don’t corner at all and they’re loud as hell going down the freeway.
-don’t try to actually do any serious off-roading in it. you’ll probably crack the axle. jeeps are just for show.
pros:
-they’re cute and lots of girls like them for that reason.
Q: how many miles can you expect to get out of a jeep wrangler?
I’m looking at used Jeep Wranglers that have anywhere from 80,000 to 175,000 miles on them. I’m just wondering how many more miles I can get before an engine rebuild.
A: too many variables for a good answer here…. 4cyl? 6cyl? 8? what year? what modifications? highway miles? offroad miles? maintenance records?
i will say that any engine with 175,000 miles on it already is a risk unless it was owned by a working mechanic. and stay away from the high mileage 4cyls. altogether. otherwise, the jeep wrangler can be one of tose “lifetime” vehicles. i love mine! do your research before making any decisions. good luck!
